In our nearly 25 years in business, we’ve had many instances where customers didn’t take our bid, went with a lower one, and then came back later, explaining that they hadn’t realized they weren’t comparing apples to apples. They didn’t realize the bid they accepted didn’t include some crucial things that ours did. And we don’t blame them—the math is simple when you can get something for less and get the same quality! But often, it’s not easy to compare, and the cheaper project costs more in the end.
When hiring a painter for your home or business, comparing estimates properly is essential. Many homeowners collect bids from different contractors but may not know what to ask to ensure a true apples-to-apples comparison. At Brush ‘N Roll, we provide detailed estimates and explain every part of our process so you understand exactly what you're getting. However, not every contractor offers that level of detail. Here’s a helpful checklist to guide you when evaluating different painting estimates.
Key Questions to Ask During an Estimate
1. Availability & Timeline
When is the contractor available to start? (For exterior projects, weather can affect scheduling.)
How long is the estimated duration of the project?
How many workers will be on-site each day?
2. Supervision & Communication
Will there be a supervisor on-site during the project?
How can you reach the contractor if you have questions or concerns?
Are project managers or crew leaders involved in overseeing the work?
3. References & Credentials
Does the contractor have checkable references from past customers?
Can they provide photos or examples of previous work?
Are they licensed in the area where the project will take place (if required by the county or municipality)?
Do they carry liability insurance and worker’s compensation?
4. Materials & Paint Quality
What brand and type of paint will be used?
How many coats of paint are included in the estimate?
Are all materials included in the price?
Does the contractor purchase the paint and materials, or is that the homeowner’s responsibility?
5. Color Samples
Who provides color samples?
Do they cost extra, or are they included in the price?
Will the contractor assist in selecting colors if needed?
6. Work Schedule & Disruptions
What days and hours will the crew be working?
Will the work be continuous, or will there be gaps between workdays?
7. Preparation & Surface Readiness
What level of surface preparation is included?
For exterior projects, will peeling paint be removed and sanded?
Will cracks, nail pops, or other imperfections be patched for interior projects?
Is power washing or other cleaning methods included before painting begins?
Will wood rot or damaged surfaces be inspected and addressed?
Who will handle wood repairs, and how will they be priced if they are needed?
8. Protecting Your Property
How will landscaping, driveways, and other areas be protected?
Will drop cloths or plastic coverings be used for nearby surfaces?
How will furniture be handled—will the contractor move and protect indoor furniture?
For exterior projects, how will deck and patio furniture be managed?
9. Rotten Wood & Repairs
What happens if rotten wood is discovered during the project?
Will the contractor replace or repair the wood, or does the homeowner need to hire another carpenter?
Is wood repair included in the estimate or charged separately?
10. Worker Facilities & On-Site Needs
Will the contractor provide a portable toilet for workers?
If not, how will access to household facilities be handled?
11. Payment & Warranty
What is the payment schedule?
What methods of payment are accepted?
Is a deposit required?
Does the contractor offer a written warranty on their work?
How do they handle any touch-ups or issues after the job is completed?
Why This Checklist Matters
Many homeowners are tempted to choose the lowest bid, but price alone doesn’t tell the whole story. A lower estimate might remove crucial preparation steps, use lower-quality materials, or require additional costs later. For example, an exterior paint job on a home that hasn't been painted in years requires thorough surface preparation. If one estimate includes proper sanding, priming, and multiple coats, while another skips those steps, the price difference could be thousands—or even tens of thousands—of dollars. Cutting corners in preparation can lead to peeling paint and costly repairs down the road.
At Brush ‘N Roll, we believe in transparency. Our estimates are detailed and comprehensive, outlining every step of the process so you know exactly what to expect. If you want to compare painting estimates, use this checklist to ensure you make a fair and informed decision.
